1. a) a round seal of lead appended to a papal bull, stamped on one side with the name of the Pope and on the other with the heads of Peter and Paul. b) a similar seal of the Byzantine and Holy Roman emperors.
2. a) a vesicle containing watery fluid and causing an elevation of the skin; a blister. b) a rounded, blisterlike, bony projection, as an inflated portion of the bony external meatus of the ear.
3. a boss, knob, or stud.
4. a) a locketlike ornament worn by children in ancient Rome: »

b) any round ornament, especially if suspended.
